I wanted to go in 2008 but wound up deciding against it. (Sorry, I just don't like Metallica) I absolutely loved it. Every moment. It poured down our first night. The sound of the raining hitting a certain section of tents and then moving over to ours was fun. Each time it was followed by a large cheer. I knew then that everyone was there for the same thing and everyone was going through the motions. My absolute favorite moment was Friday night. Though a few of my friends wound up sleeping all of Friday night. I don't know how! Anyway, I felt like I was in this huge ocean. Kind of floating around from show to show. David Byrne was the highlight. Hearing 40,000 people sing "Burning Down The House" was amazing. Crystal Castles, Paul Oakenfold, Public Enemy were all on that same night too. The whole weekend was amazing. Saturday was a bit different. Nine Inch Nails was the show of the night. Though I couldn't handle the intensity. I walked over to MGMT expecting a fun show but did not get that. They just didn't sound good. And I remember me and my group friends not talking for the longest time. Then I turned to someone and said "This isn't good right? Like this isn't just me?" and they all agreed. It was a weird moment but a good group bonding experience too. Sunday was Erykah Badu, Michael and Michael Have Issue and Snoop Dogg. Sunday was very chill. Getting a really close spot for Badu was gratifying as we hadn't gotten that close all weekend. As the night winded down, I was feeling a bit sad. I didn't want to leave. I felt like it was the thing I had been looking for at the time. I wound up staying Sunday night and kind of watching Phish. I'm not a fan really at all but sitting there and watching the crowd was great. The crowd was full of people being highly interactive with each other and hula hoops and everything else. As I sat there, I really didn't want to leave. But as all things go, It had to end. We left Monday morning. The first shower when I got back home felt heavenly. But that doesn't even come close the feeling I felt while I was there. I haven't' missed a year since then. I try to take that feeling with me all year around. Not just there.

I went to Lollapalooza (can't remember what year) and got in the crowd for Girl Talk, which was the most amazing thing I'd ever experienced live -- hot, sweaty, happy people all around, limbs all akimbo. I was sort of flipping out, and didn't realize how exhausted and overheated I was actually getting. I forgot that I was not 18 anymore. So I see they are pulling people out of the crowd at the front who are overheated. At some point I realize I'm done: need to get out, go hydrate and come back.

Except when they pull me out, the security guy grabs me by the neck instead of walking me around to the side. It becomes clear what's happening: he's gonna kick my ass out. I don't know if he thought I was causing trouble, but you know how these things go. I just wanted to get out of the crowd. But then I'm like "screw it. If I'm gonna get kicked out after paying all this money, I want to actually get kicked out for doing something." I feel his hand go slack on my neck, and I'm staring at the ground and see stairs leading up to the stage.

BAM! I take a hard left, bound up the steps and join the crowd on stage. I leap up onto the table where Greg is mixing and just start dancing. It felt like minutes, but it must have been seconds. The next thing I know I'm being flipped over a guard's shoulder and carried out like a sack of potatoes. He sets me down (doesn't throw me, thank god) and says "this guy's gone." Clearly, staying out is not an option.

I'm walking down the fence row, and I see a Golf Cart I think I can scramble up and hop the fence. But then, out of no where, an opening...they open the fence to let a food vendor in. I see my chance and take off through the hole past everyone. I hear "STOP THAT GUY! HEY!" and I don't turn around. There is a semi tractor trailer parked on some gravel, and I do a Bourne Identity-style, second base stealing slide underneath it, pop up, jump a large bush like Ferris Bueller, and run...run...run. When I'm confident I've lost everyone in the crowd, I take my shirt off and change the doo-rag I have on (just in case it's somehow recognizable, by any chance). I go back and enjoy the rest of the show.

A year or so later when I'm writing for this music mag and interviewing Greg, I tell him at the end of the interview that I really need to apologize for crashing the stage and dancing on his table, and that it was probably out of line. He says "Why are you apologizing? That's awesome!" Haven't done anything like that since I was in high school.

So there's that story...

Re: Concert review: The Polyphonic Spree (with New Fumes and Sweet Lee Morrow) raise all voices at the Duck Room, Friday, May 11

The Spree were great, but I found the sound mix to be terrible. Granted, I'm sure it's tough to blend all the different instruments and vocals, but I'm confident it would have sounded better in someone else's hands (and in a bigger room). The Duck Room was not the venue for these guys. What I thought would be an intimate experience ended up to be a frustrating one.

Re: Event review: KDHX fans and DJs share love, music and chaos at Midwest Mayhem at the City Museum, Thursday, May 10

This event just keeps getting better and better!

Re: ‘Give the audience a new experience’ An interview with Maria Lindén of I Break Horses

Happiness resides not in possessions and not in gold; the feeling of happiness dwells in the soul. Like many, we are long-time fans of Social D, and were extremely dissapointed with this performance. We almost left when they did an AARP version of "Ball and Chain." We did stay for the encore.
